The research report “From Agony to Dignity: 77 Women’s Struggle for Peace and Justice” was launched in 2019 by NGO Asosiasaun Chega! Ba ita (ACbit) and comes at a time where there is urgent attention needed from the community to address the current situation of women survivors of past violence during the Indonesian occupation, and from domestic violence in the present. The report provides an insight into the lives of 77 women survivors across three municipalities, Baucau, Covalima and Ouecusse; and shows results from Participatory Action Research (PAR) that many women survivors remain vulnerable because of existing inequalities, such as limited access to social assistance and information on their rights, which restricts their ability to meet their needs and escape conditions of economic vulnerability. To address these issues, ACbit concludes with five recommendations to present to Government, civil society groups and the community in 2020.

The report was part of ACbit’s commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Program with the technical support of UN Women and the Government of Japan. For more information contact Director of ACbit Manuela Leong Pereira: naromahon@gmail.com

About ACbit

The saying “Chega Ba Ita” underlines our belief that the CAVR report was written based on the experiences and voices of the people, for the people. It is not a document that should be shelved and forgotten. It is a living document to be understood, debated, and re-invented for generations to come.
